A good home routine makes fitted hair extensions easier to look after between salon visits. This guide focuses on everyday care; your own fitting method and hair brand determine the exact products and washing instructions to follow. Your morning check
Gently detangle in sections using the brush recommended for your fitting method. Support the hair close to the attachments and work upwards from the ends. Check the underside and nape rather than brushing only the surface. If an attachment catches the brush, stop and separate the section carefully instead of pulling through it.
On wash days
Detangle first, then wash upright so the hair falls in its usual direction. Clean the scalp carefully and let the shampoo move through the lengths without scrubbing them into a bundle. Use aftercare products approved for your extension brand. Keep conditioner and rich products on the lengths, away from attachment points, and rinse thoroughly.
Dry before styling or bed
Squeeze out excess water with a towel rather than rubbing. Dry the hair thoroughly, paying particular attention to attachment areas. Do not leave fitted extensions damp overnight. Follow the brand's drying instructions and keep hot styling tools away from bonds and tapes. You do not need to straighten or curl your hair after every wash.
An evening routine you can repeat
Before bed, gently check for tangles and secure dry hair in a comfortable loose plait. Avoid a tight style that pulls at the roots. If your hair feels unusually knotty after exercise, tackle small sections gently rather than dragging a brush through the whole head.
When to ask for help
